St Anne’s Film Night on Thursday 18 June will be a screening of Alan Bennett’s ‘The Choral’.
‘The Choral’ is a 2025 British historical drama set in a small Yorkshire town during World War I. With most local men lost to the army, the Choral Society committee is determined to press ahead with new recruits. They engage a controversial new choir master Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), recently returned from a career in Germany, who unites a ragtag group of teens and townsfolk to perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius. As they prepare, wartime tensions, prejudice, and personal struggles surface – and the community discovers the best response to the war is to make music together.
The evening will begin at 7pm with live music from the Burntwood U3A Choir.
The film will start at 7.30pm, with an interval halfway through when refreshments including tea, coffee, soft drinks, cakes and popcorn will be served.
Entry is free. All donations welcome, which raise funds for St Anne’s to help facilitate its ongoing programme of community activities.
Film Night takes place on the third Thursday of each month and relaunched in April with ‘Downton Abbey, The Grand Finale’. Co-Op Highfields Road generously provided the refreshments. In May, a special screening of ‘A Game Of Two Halves’ took place, after which director Khayam Khan conducted a Q&A about how the film was made. Dhol and tabla percussionist Sahil Solanki kicked off the evening with live music and Chase Balti supplied Indian snacks for the interval.
