Set against the harsh urban landscape of late 70s New York City, Ms.45 follows a mute seamstress called Thana. One day on her walk home from the garment district, a masked man assaults her. When she comes home to find a stranger in her apartment, something clicks: a spiral into violent retribution with a .45 caliber pistol.

A unwaveringly feminist film for what appears on the surface to be a gritty NYC exploitation flick. The masterful Abel Ferrara, goes way beyond B movie sensibilities to make something so empathetic and resonate with survivors of sexual violence. Ms.45 is an incredibly catharic film that doesn’t question the behaviour of survivors, and completely avoids reducing revenge to an image of sensational violence like others in the canon.
