So Surreal: Behind the Masks is a feature documentary that traces the storied journey of Indigenous masks from the far reaches of North America in Yup'ik territory and Canada's northwest coast into the hands of European Surrealists, influencing the work and worldview of some of the most well-known modern artists and writers of all time: Max Ernst, André Breton and Joan Miró – all while following the dramatic quest to return a mask taken from the Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw people over a century ago. Part caper, part road trip, part spiritual journey, So Surreal: Behind the Masks follows Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond as he travels coast-to-coast and across the Atlantic and back, gradually piecing together this groundbreaking global story of influence, reconnection and restitution. The film features the work and conversations with Yup'ik artists Chuna McIntyre, John McIntyre, Drew Michael and Alutiiq/Sugpiaq artist Perry Eaton along with the powerful music and dancing of Pamyua.
Co-directed by Neil Diamond and Joanne Robertson. The program will feature a live performance by members of Pamyua, which are featured in the film, as well as a Q&A session. Free; registration recommended.
