About this Event

The Boulder County Film Commission proudly presents:

Directing 101: Vision and Craft, taught by Andrea Nordgren

Whether you are new to directing and interested in fundamentals or you are an experienced director seeking to advance your craft and get inspired, we will cover the role and practice of director, including philosophies, processes, and purpose. You'll learn to examine and hone your point of view as well as tips and tools that you can incorporate in every stage of directing a project.

The landscape for commercial directing continues to change and old models won't necessarily work for the future. Learn what makes a great director as we explore vision, communication, technical and practical skills, craft, best practices, tools, and resources. Equip yourself to not only work as a director, but to differentiate yourself and create a positive practice.

Our focus will be geared toward directing for commercials, branded content, corporate, agency and brand-direct work. We may touch on directing for film such as shorts, features, narratives, and documentaries.

Major sections of the class include:

  • Developing your Voice as a Director
  • Pre-Production
  • Directing Talent
  • Set Communication and Leadership
  • Post and Finishing

While the class discussion may include AI, we will not be focusing on this nor equipping attendees with tools or resources related to artifical intelligence.

About the Instructor:

Andrea Nordgren is a Colorado-based commercial and film director and owner of production company, Heroine Films. She has worked in advertising for 30 years, including brand-side, corporate, in agencies, and freelance as a director, producer, executive producer, and creative director. She has directed and produced commercials, branded content, narrative and documentary films, and experiential/events.

As a filmmaker, her visual approach to telling moving and inspiring stories is intimate, vibrant, and human. Her nomadic childhood shaped her into a highly agile creator with an intense curiosity about human behavior, a life-long wanderlust, and a passion for championing diverse communities, cultures, and causes. She has a degree in psychology and a background as a substance-abuse therapist, which elevate her natural ability to genuinely connect with people. While her roots began in docu-style storytelling and she is highly skilled in working with real people, she is experienced in the narrative space and loves working with professional talent. Andrea’s set style is frequently described as calm and collaborative. When not obsessed with prep or directing, she is likely hiking, running, or attending a film festival.

A persistent ally and activist for diversity, equity, and inclusion, she serves as an industry mentor and advocates for representation in front of and behind the lens. She is a member of Alliance for Women Directors and is Executive Producer on the 3% Movement team, a conference and community sparking positive change in representation in advertising and media.

In addition to her commercial and advertising work, she has directed and produced many short films and feature films, including: A Song for Imogene, a narrative feature currently on Amazon -Erased, a feature documentary on drug-facilitated sexual assault -Netflix promotion for Rez Ball, a LeBron James film by Sydney Freeland and Sterlin Harjo.

Brands she has worked with: FIFA, Eli Lilly, Samsung, Microsoft, Bleacher Report, HGTV, Wayfair, Food Network, McDonald’s, Chevrolet, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott, Chipotle, Qdoba, Milwaukee Tool, Yamaha, IBM, Verizon, TED Talks, Northwestern Mutual, LPL Financial, Valley Health System, North Kansas City Hospital, Mercy Health, Owensboro Health, Stryker, Numotion, CSL Behring, Gilead Sciences, McCain, US Foods, Colorado State University, Lake Forest College, Concordia University, Alverno College, CNH Industrial, Case IH.
