Is consumption an everyday act — or already a spectacle?
Filip Rzodkiewicz’s painting answers this through a clamorous imagery of the market hall, the bazaar and “in-store fights,” where economy merges with tension, bodies and desire. It is a world in which prices are still spoken aloud, and choice is born not from an algorithm but from conflict.
In the exhibition “Clamour and Battle at Biedronka”, the iconography of historical battles meets contemporary consumer culture — from the market stall to the shopping mall, from the everyday to the grotesque. This is painting in which consumption ceases to be background and becomes an event — sometimes comic, sometimes brutal, but always too intense to remain neutral.
Filip Rzodkiewicz (b. 2000, Gdańsk) is a young-generation painter working between Gdańsk and the international contemporary art scene. His works examine themes of consumer culture, the excess of images and the behavior of contemporary crowds, combining figurative painting, abstraction and visual noise.
After graduating from the Painting Faculty of the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts, the artist actively participates in exhibitions and residencies in Europe and beyond — among others at the Rothko Museum (Daugavpils) and in South Korea. He is a laureate of the W. Fangor competition and a finalist of “99 Future Blue Chip Artists.” He is currently in residence at the WL4 Mleczny Piotr space and also initiates and curates projects dedicated to young painting.
The exhibition is part of the “Gdańsk in Vilnius” festival. This annual international cultural exchange event held in Vilnius is devoted to presenting the culture, art and creators of the Polish city of Gdańsk and to strengthening ties between the two cities.
