On Monday, June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Fifth Third will host “Protect Your Money: Banking Safety & Scam Prevention.”
About this Event

This is a free community event open to the public in partnership with Matrix Human Services. The event will feature a panel of experts to tackle one of the most urgent financial threats facing consumers today: scams.

About one in five Americans has lost money to an online scam or attack, according to the Aspen Institute, and older adults are being disproportionately impacted. Adults 60+ reported losses of $7.7 billion in 2025, up nearly four-fold from 2024. From government imposters and fake bank representatives to tech support fraud, scammers are growing more sophisticated and targeting everyday people with increasing aggression. “Protect Your Money” is designed to cut through the noise and deliver real, actionable information that Detroiters can use to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.

Attendees will hear directly from:

  • Kris Edwards, Head of Fraud Prevention, Fifth Third Bank
  • LaToya Hall, Program Director, Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University
  • Local law enforcement representatives

During this interactive community conversation, attendees will learn:

  • How to identify impersonation scams, fake bank representatives and government imposters
  • Warning signs of financial fraud and identity theft
  • How scammers target consumers, seniors and families with growing sophistication
  • Tips to protect personal and banking information
  • What steps to take if you suspect fraud
  • Where to report scams and access community resources

The event will also include a live Q&A session and practical resources attendees can take home and share with family members and neighbors. Refreshments will be provided.

Please RSVP through the Free General Admission Ticket link on this EventBrite page or email [email protected].
