About this Event
Local artist and choreographer Riya Devi-Ashby will be delving into the history of the fearsome faces in South Asian religious art, from demons to goddesses and guardian deities, and tying it back to her own artistic practice and experiences. Walking around the streets and shopfronts in Asia, you’ll notice the many demon masks guarding doorways to bring good luck and drive away the evil eye. Similarly, goddesses like Kali, Tara, Simhasini, and more all have terrifying appearances, despite their sacredness. Why might a goddess be terrifying, and what does it mean for us as dancers and creatives who recreate sacred mythology in all its complexity? What is the connection between beauty and ugliness, truth and deception, in the theater arts? Sutradhar presents this free, family friendly event with an interactive arts and crafts component- come learn about art history and contemporary practice, and make your own original mask to take home!
