One of the defining features of German classical philosophy is its emphasis on intersubjectivity. In one way or another, the various thinkers in this tradition gravitated towards the idea that subjectivity is essentially mediated through the relation to other subjects. In other words, intersubjectivity constitutes a crucial moment of subjectivity as such.
Arguably, it was Fichte who inaugurated this line of thought. The conference will explore the keyl concepts of subjectivity, intersubjectivity, and political philosophy. It will examine Fichte's theory of the self's constitution through limitation (Anstoß) and its subsequent development into the social dimension via Aufforderung (summons) and Anerkennung (recognition), analyzing the systematic relationship between these notions and their practical function. A central theme is the evolution of Fichte's view of the state, shifting from a juridical institution securing individual freedom in his early work to a more ethical, formative community built on shared culture in his later writings. Ultimately, the conference will address how Fichte's idea of intersubjectivity impacts the state's authority and its relevance to contemporary debates on the relationship between the individual, community, and the state in emancipatory politics.
