About this Event
Lisbon brings forward the everyday realities that feminist urbanism seeks to address: walkability shaped by topography, strong reliance on public transport, intergenerational neighbourhoods, and the visible role of care in public space. The city’s rhythms, who moves, when, and how make inequalities and opportunities tangible, offering a living classroom for exploring gender-responsive urban design and governance.
A key point of departure for this edition is the iconic tram network, particularly around Praça Luís de Camões (22, 1200-243 Lisboa). This is more than a transit stop, it is a dense urban node where mobility, tourism, local life, and public space intersect. The tram itself becomes a lens into feminist placemaking: who has access, how space is shared, how safety and comfort are experienced, and how infrastructure supports (or limits) everyday care journeys.
This location sits at the heart of Lisbon’s historic fabric, connecting neighbourhoods with very different social dynamics, from Bairro Alto to Chiado making it ideal for observing how public space is negotiated across genders, ages, and uses. It also highlights key tensions: accessibility in older urban forms, the pressure of tourism, and the balance between economic activity and local life.
Lisbon therefore offers not just a case study, but a dynamic environment to question how cities can better respond to diverse needs. It allows the academy to move from theory into lived experience exploring how feminist placemaking can shape more inclusive, safe, and responsive urban futures.
