About this Event

The rich sounds of Black Christmas spirituals reflect the true spirit of the Christmas Season

Most would agree, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. The radio stations have been playing the songs since August. Stores have been capitalizing and monopolizing on the season since the summer. It’s Christmas…and even the most devoted follower of Jesus can get distracted and swept away in all the hustle and bustle. Nevertheless, it’s also that time of year the world has the opportunity to experience the simplicity of the season. That peace came in a very unexpected way blowing the minds of those who received him then and continuing that in our lives today. As our world seems to get more busy each and every year, it becomes our role as Jesus followers to constantly ask ourselves how we can continue to penetrate our culture with the gospel and how it can continue to blow minds and saturate hearts.

Also music has been known to have therapeutic effects on individuals, providing a source of emotional support and healing. In particular, gospel music has been found to have a positive impact on mental health, providing a sense of hope and comfort.

From the traditional sound of Go Tell it on the Mountain to the contemporary style of Kirk Franklin, Black Gospel Christmas music conveys a sense of wonder and passion for the Christmas season and the birth of our Savior. Two Baylor University experts in Black gospel music, Bob Darden and Stephen Newby, share their love of the rich sounds of Christmas spirituals, which differ from Christmas carols in sound and history, through two special recordings – “Black Nativity” and “Christmas Celebration”.
