About the Keynote Speaker:
Val Simpson is a Rapid City native and 5th generation South Dakotan. Val joined Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting as Director of West River Donor Relations in their Black Hills Studio a year ago.
Leaning on her strengths as a financial communicator and process improver over three decades in the Rapid City business community, her diverse career has included work in entrepreneurial, governmental and corporate settings, in the utility and financial services industries, and in finance/accounting, communications/marketing and community impact roles.
A life-long volunteer committed to improving her community and state, Val has served on numerous boards, and currently serves for the South Dakota History Society Foundation, South Dakota Cabin Owner’s Association, Elevate’s PAC and Rapid City’s Community Investment Committee. She co-led Rapid City’s last school bond campaign in 2020.
As a South Dakota girl, Val loves how SDPB connects all South Dakotans together through common history and places across our rural state, appreciation of art, music, high school activities, and democracy in action. She believes her calling is to help South Dakotans discover and celebrate our shared intersections of life.
Val graduated from Stevens High School and earned her MBA from the University of South Dakota and undergraduate business degrees from Baylor University, which she attended on a full-ride academic scholarship after being named by then-President Ronald Reagan as one of South Dakota’s two United States Presidential Scholars.
She is Mom of both Miss South Dakota 2024 and the Buffalo Chip’s Hot Hunk of 2024. She calls Rapid City home with her husband, Dave, four cats and one huge flower garden.
