Val Tomich is a self-taught artist who began painting during the pandemic. Her portraits grow out of bold color and layered patterns; she often starts with abstract shapes and marks and lets the patterns guide the image until a face begins to emerge. The figures that develop this way can feel slightly distorted, hinting at the complicated ways we see ourselves and each other.
