About this Event
While haute couture (French for "high sewing") emerged as a Parisian innovation in the mid-19th century, it has since evolved into a symbol of luxury, craftsmanship, and artistic expression throughout the world of fashion. Who are some of fashion’s brightest stars who left an indelible mark on fashion history? From pioneering concepts like the little black dress and power shoulders to avant-garde fashion and ready-to-wear, it's time to delve into a transformative era of couture houses and superstar designers whose legacies live on through contemporary fashion.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series about high fashion’s most famous designers. In Part Three: Runway Visionaries, we'll take a deep dive into the history of runway shows with a focus on the 1960s to 1990s, and highlight several iconic fashion designers whose runway creations changed the course of fashion history.
Led by fashion historian Summer Anne Lee, this digital showcase will include:
- An exploration into the groundbreaking influence of Yves Saint Laurent, the "Pied Piper of fashion,” and his transformative impact on haute couture
- Space Age Fashion and 1960s miniskirts from French couturier André Courrèges
- Unconventional designs from the world of "enfant terrible” Paco Rabanne
- The legacy of Halston, America's first “superstar” designer, and his pivotal role in shaping contemporary American fashion
- Innovative contributions of Issey Miyake, known for his avant-garde designs and pioneering use of technology
- An overview of the career of Patrick Kelly, the first American to be admitted to the Chambre syndicale du prêt-à-porter des couturiers et des créateurs de mode
- A look at the collections that gained Alexander McQueen the nickname "the hooligan of English fashion”
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Summer — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
