About this Event
While haute couture (French for "high sewing") emerged as a Parisian innovation in the mid-19th century, it has since evolved into a symbol of luxury, craftsmanship, and artistic expression throughout the world of fashion. Who are some of fashion’s brightest stars who left an indelible mark on fashion history? From pioneering concepts like the little black dress and power shoulders to avant-garde fashion and ready-to-wear, it's time to delve into a transformative era of couture houses and superstar designers whose legacies live on through contemporary fashion.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series about high fashion’s most famous designers. In Part Two: Stars of Modern Fashion, we'll focus on innovative designers of fashion from approximately the 1910s through the early 1960s who made their marks on dress history during the pivotal time that fashion became “modern.”
Led by fashion historian Summer Anne Lee, this digital showcase will include:
- The fashion contributions of Gabrielle Chanel, a pioneer of minimalist and casual style for women
- The surreal world crafted by Elsa Schiaparelli and Claire McCardell's groundbreaking influence on American women's sportswear
- Glamorous designs by Gilbert Adrian, known as the "Designer To The Stars"
- A glimpse into the mastery of Cristóbal Balenciaga, the unparalleled force in haute couture
- Explanation of how Christian Dior, founder of the "New Look,” influenced post-war fashion
- Masterpieces created by Charles James, known as America's First Couturier
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Summer — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
