So what is the Fan Dance?
The Fan Dance is a legendary endurance event held on Pen y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons (South Wales). It’s best known as part of the UK Special Forces (SAS and SBS) selection process, and has since been adapted into civilian endurance challenges. Here are the key points:
Military Origins:
The Fan Dance is one of the first major fitness tests in SAS selection. Candidates carry a heavy bergen (rucksack, often 25–30 kg plus rifle and kit) and must complete the route within strict time limits - 4 hrs 10 mins! It’s used to test physical fitness, endurance, navigation, and mental resilience.
The Route:
The classic Fan Dance route is a 24 km (15-mile) march over mountainous terrain:
Starts at the Storey Arms (on the A470 below Pen y Fan).
Ascends Pen y Fan via the steep Jacob’s Ladder.
Descends the other side into the valley and continues toward Torpantau (the "turnaround point").
Returns over Pen y Fan again and down Jacob’s Ladder to the start.
The Fan Dance has become almost mythical in endurance culture. For the SAS, it’s a weeding-out event — if you can’t hack it here, you won’t last the rest of selection. For civilians, finishing it is considered a badge of honor.
Now obviously we are not going to try and do it in 4 hrs or carry the weights the Special Forces guys do.
I know many people are interested in this route and doing it on Remembrance Sunday and raisng money for forces charities at the same time is a day well spent.
I hope you can join me in this challenging hike. Please bring plenty of layers, waterproofs and enough water/food to sustain you.
