What’s at stake in a novel’s first line and in its translation? This workshop explores key challenges through iconic French and Francophone
About this Event

What happens in the very first line of a novel and why does it matter so deeply when it is translated?

The opening sentence sets the tone, rhythm, and promise of a literary work. It invites the reader in, establishes a voice, and often contains, in miniature, the entire world of the book. For the translator, it is both a threshold and a challenge.

In this workshop, participants will explore the art and craft of literary translation through the close reading of opening lines from major French and Francophone novels. Together, we will examine how translators respond to linguistic nuance, stylistic tension, cultural context, and authorial voice, while navigating the constant pull between fidelity to the original and creative freedom in the target language.

Through comparison, discussion, and guided reflection, participants will gain insight into the translator’s dilemma and into the invisible choices that shape every translated text.

If you are curious to discover or rediscover— some of the great masters of French and Francophone literature, and to hear how their voices resonate in English, this workshop is for you. Texts will include works by Albert Camus andMarcel Proust, as well as by other authors from the French-speaking world, offering a wide range of literary voices. offering a wide range of literary voices.

This workshop is open to participants of all levels of French. A solid command of English is essential, as discussion will focus on translation choices and the crafting of literary voice in English.
