Join Heritage Vancouver and the False Creek South Neighbourhood Association for a walking tour through False Creek South, a distinct living community developed in the 1970s that continues to embody a community identity of social responsibility, belonging and friendship. Consistently listed on Heritage Vancouver’s Top10 Watch List, False Creek South’s future is uncertain as the City of Vancouver considers redevelopment of the entire neighbourhood.
Located north of 6th Avenue between the Cambie and Burrard Bridges, the neighbourhood features low-to-mid-rise housing clustered around gardens, courtyards, plazas, walking and cycling paths and green space, including a large waterfront park. Reflecting the early 1970s values of a ‘livable city’ and ‘quality of life’, the area was developed on City-owned former industrial lands along the south shore of False Creek. The master plan called for a mix of one-third each of non-market rental housing, co-ops and condominiums in a “Garden City” landscaped setting. The urban design of the neighbourhood was planned to foster social interaction and community-building across housing types.
The False Creek South Neighbourhood Association and Heritage Vancouver will jointly lead the tour. For over a decade, there has been the big question of what is going to happen to False Creek South. The tour will give context surrounding the planned redevelopment of the neighbourhood. There will be a focus on a recent report by Heritage Vancouver that documents the significant cultural aspects of False Creek South, from the specific perspective of False Creek South as a living community. The tour will cover some of the findings showing how the people interact with their physical environment that makes it a distinct cultural place in the city.
Please note we will be walking on a variety of terrain such as grass, uneven ground but will try to keep it mostly to paved paths.
