On Saturday, September 21, from 4 PM to 6 PM, Rise Church Tigard (formerly Calvin Presbyterian Church) will welcome the community to help celebrate its community garden harvest and enjoy a day of family fun, including an appearance by Shaniko, a local rock duo.“Our mission is to lift our community,” says Pastor Jim Wallace. “So, while we’re having fun with Scottish pipers, some rock music and picnic type food, we also recognize that September is Hunger Action Month. More than 47 million people in the US face hunger, including 1 in 5 children,” he continues.
“We can’t feed the nation, but our goal in support of that is to end hunger and food insecurity in our own neighborhood.”
Rise has a community garden, The Great Potato Project (members are given “grow bags,” soil, fertilizer and seedling potatoes to grow potatoes at home), the Tigard Food Project, a weekly crop table and strong relationships with local food pantries. Recently church members switched the Sunday crop table, which features bounty from Rise’s community garden and donated food, to Saturdays, from nine until noon. The neighborhood took notice and has engaged in sharing free coffee and conversation.
Adds Rise member Joanne Shipley, “The Tigard Grange Community Food Project gives us 100 to 150 pounds of produce every single week. They are wonderful local community partners in this whole process.”
She continues, “Several folks who dropped by said that Rise had been ‘just a building’ to them until they saw our signs and decided to check out the produce. Now they know that building is full of real people who actually care about and want to support their neighbors.”
The fun will start when Pastor Wallace welcomes the St. Andrews Society Pipe Band to kick things off on a high note. The music will continue with rock duo Shaniko (dancing is encouraged) and musical selections from the Northwest Senior Theatre, followed by a brief skit from the Mask & Mirror Community Theatre.
Tigard Police and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue will be represented, along with community groups staffing information tables. Rise has also invited some local crafters to offer their creations for sale.
The Rise Art Gallery will be open for viewing throughout the festival, and volunteers will serve free hot dogs, watermelon, ice cream, popcorn, and cotton candy.
