About this Event
This tour is geared towards agriculture industry professionals and aspiring professionals, but is open to all.
Join Oxbow Farm and Conservation Center and Agriculture Program Manager Anthony Reyes for an exploration of Fall cover crops! During this field tour, we will discuss how to choose and implement the right mix of fall cover crops for your space and have an opportunity to see different mixes and varieties perform. Topics will include the best seeding methods, appropriate densities, and the optimal timing for mowing or roller crimping in no-till systems.
We will explore the benefits, types, and methods of incorporating cover crops in Organic farming systems. Additionally, you’ll learn about our ongoing trials, including initial results and learnings from the first year of testing summer cover crops for drought resilience, and have the opportunity to ask questions about cover crops or general Organic and sustainable farming practices. Cover crops and varieties we can expect to explore include: Cereal Rye, Triticale, Barley, Pea, Fava Bean, Hairy and woolypod vetch, berseem and crimson clover, oats, and frost killed cover crops. We will talk through the benefits and challenges of the various species and mixes and support in answering how to best incorporate cover crops into your farming system.
This field tour is supported and offered at no cost by the Transition Organic Partnership Program. If you are a transitioning producer or are interested in Organic certification, check out more resources at: www.organictransition.org . We will have fliers and be able to answer any questions pertaining to Organic certification, especially as it relates to cover crops, and how to become involved in the transition organic program!
