Join us for a launch and celebration of Assistant Professor of Black Studies Karma Frierson’s new book, Local Color: Reckoning with Blackness in the Port City of Veracruz (Duke University Press, 2025), hosted by the Frederick Douglass Institute and the Department of Black Studies in Hawkins-Carlson!Local Color explores the racialized histories and cultural politics of Blackness in Veracruz, Mexico, offering a powerful meditation on Afro-Mexican identity, colonial legacies, and the aesthetics of resistance. Through archival research, ethnography, and visual analysis, Frierson examines how Blackness is remembered, performed, and contested in a port city shaped by transnational flows and local reckonings.
