The event is jointly hosted by the Arts Management Program at the University at Buffalo and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
Cultural funding in Germany and the USA are quite different. As an example, opera houses in Germany receive up to 80% public funding, with 20% from earned revenue and donations. In the US, it’s the other way around; 10–15% is public funding, and the large remainder is from ticket sales and donations. Why the difference?
Professor Steffen Höhne of the Institute for Musicology at Weimar University, Germany, will talk about the traditions and current challenges of arts and cultural systems in the US and Germany through the lens of cultural, political, and sociological perspectives and in the context of local versus national realities. Case studies include examples of so-called high art, such as opera, and popular music forms, such as jazz.
