A book that brings Greythorn’s story to life
Faces of Greythorn traces the transformation of this one-square-kilometre pocket of Balwyn North — from its early 1900s orchards bursting with lemons, limes, apples and cherries, to its violet farm, its famous wildlife sanctuary (1939–1953) run by the Maughan family with more than 200 animals, and later its evolution into a bustling housing estate and shopping strip in the 1950s.
Today, Greythorn stands proudly as a vibrant village hub, strategically positioned at the crossroads of the North East Link and serving as a gateway to Melbourne’s expanding east.
