Join CMA affinity group Friends of African American Art & Culture (FAAAC) for the ninth annual Sip & Scribble, an artful, soulful coloring party. Unwind with friends, enjoy a complimentary wine tasting inspired by the French Moderns exhibition, and express your creativity as you color pages inspired by the works of renowned regional artists. This year's event features special guests Tariq Mix and Tarish Pipkins, also known as Jeghetto. Each artist will contribute two drawings to color and be available throughout the evening to engage with participants, answer questions, and discuss their artistic practices.
Free as part of Free First Thursday at the CMA. Wine tasting provided by VS Wine Tasting. Cash bar.
Tariq Mix finds beauty and inspiration in Black American culture. He developed a love for fine art during his time at Howard University and has nurtured his craft through the use of various mediums since 2001. Taking compositional influence from greats like Romare Bearden, storytelling cues from Jacob Lawrence, and bold linework shaped by the works of Picasso, Mix portrays the beauty in the chaos that can go hand-in-hand with the Black American experience. He uses bold colors and strong lines to tell the story of Black identity and its influence over American fashion and music. Mix’s work can be found in the private collections of Tommy Mottola and Donald Byrd, along with various other private collectors. He hopes his work encourages viewers to embrace the storied Black legacy.
Tarish Pipkins aka Jeghetto was born and raised in a small steel mill town called Clairton, Pennsylvania, about 45 minutes south of downtown Pittsburgh. A self-taught jack-of-all-trades, he is a visual artist with expertise in various media such as acrylics, watercolors, portraits, and murals. Jeghetto started building puppets at the age of 30; now he is known as a self-taught master builder and puppeteer whose puppets are abstract moving sculptures made of mostly found and recycled materials. He has received two grants from the Jim Henson Foundation for his stage production 5P1N0K10 (SPINOKIO) as well as a grant from Heather Henson's Handmade Puppet Dreams film company to adapt 5P1N0K10 into a short film. A current board member of the Jim Henson Foundation, Jeghetto has worked with Missy Elliott, Pharrell Williams, Alec Baldwin, and a few other celebrities on music videos, commercials, and television. Before jumping into puppetry full-time, Jeghetto worked at a private school for children with special needs, teaching students on the spectrum social skills through puppetry. He also ran a Level 3 group home with his wife for a few years, working as therapeutic foster parents. After leaving the group home, they continued to do residential foster care. Teaching children and exposing them to the arts is a passion for Jeghetto.
