Some info about our artist for the night:

Exterior is the artist moniker of Edinburgh electronic producer Doug MacDonald. Exterior’s music is a fusion of the UK dance continuum colliding with noise-rock and European vocal traditions. It is a sonic exploration by turns orgiastic, ecstatic, plaintive and propulsive. Exterior’s signature palette consists of analogue synths, live drums, processed guitars and recombined vocal samples. The results are a restless and inventive body of dissonance and resolution, engaging on record, and transporting in a live context. In sync with Exterior’s dynamic live performances are the psychoactive projections of long-term collaborator and visual artist, Panos Baras. The combination of Exterior’s music with Baras’s visuals were characterised as a “...stunning success…” in Hidden Door 2023.

Exterior’s second album ‘HOLOCENE’ was released via Edinburgh imprint Hobbes Music in November 2024. HOLOCENE, a term from Geology and Stratigraphy, refers to the last 12000 years of Earth systems history which elides the developing impact of human activity on climate. The record and live performance of HOLOCENE emerged from two years Exterior spent in studio and live experimentation. The results are a seamless reimagining of electronica which collapses the purported distinctions between dance and rock. Further elevating the achievement is the recontextualisation of Gaelic and Bulgarian vocal traditions. HOLOCENE is at once utterly familiar and compellingly alien.

Exterior’s debut EP ‘Plagued Streets of Pity’ 2019 and debut album ‘Umbilical Digital’ 2022 received vinyl releases via Hobbes Music. Fans of the records include the likes of Avalon Emerson, JD Twitch, Laurent Garnier, Auntie Flo and ND_Baumecker. Plaudits emanated from the respected theaudiophileman and monolithcocktail platforms, with the latter concluding “...Synthesised music with a human touch…This is techno, electronica with a heart and purpose…”. Shows to date have included billings alongside the likes of JD Twitch, Auntie Flo, Nightwave, Max Cooper, Sofay and Machinedrum.
