Exploring the Early Prehistoric Landscape of the Avon Valley and the Stonehenge Area Open Day

Join us on Saturday, October 5th, for a day of talks and Q&A with specialists on a range of subjects associated with the project's results.
Whilst we have a good understanding of the Stonehenge landscape during its phases of construction, less is known about the surrounding environment in early prehistory, particularly the Mesolithic some 4000-9000 years ago.
An AHRC-funded project, led by the University of Southampton and the Arctic University of Norway, has taken up the challenge of answering these questions and utilises new methods such as sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA), remote scanning, and sedimentological techniques to explore the nature of the River Avon valley landscape and the neighbouring Stonehenge World Heritage Site (SWHS).
Key questions to be addressed include whether the pre-Stonehenge environment was forested or open. What evidence of hunter-gatherer activity and management of the landscape can be determined? What role did large herbivores, particularly Aurochs, play in the nature of the Mesolithic landscape?
The meeting is FREE, but for enquiries and to reserve a place, email:
