About this Event
Many are strikingly beautiful, often bearing magnificent floral displays that are intoxicatingly fragrant. Each has a unique story that will inspire as we learn how to grow them for our personal gardens.
Since ancient times some of these species have been instrumental as consciousness altering allies. Shamanic practices often utilized them as sacred plant teachers for divination and communication with ancestral spirits. Daturas have even been referred to as the most widely used hallucinogenic plants in the world. With words of caution we will learn about the tropane alkaloids that enhance some of the species as we work with cuttings and sow seeds.
Jane will also share some personal stories of collecting, preserving, propagating, and distributing plants nationwide.
We will propagate cuttings of Brugmansia, Solandra, Iochroma, and Methysticodendron and sow seeds of Nicotiana, Datura, and Withania
All participants will leave the farm with seeds and cuttings of these important plants, knowledge of how to cultivate them & new friends
All levels of interest are welcome!
About Jane Straight:
Jane still considers herself on the endangered species list as a Flower Child of the sixties, a role that instilled deep reverence for Mother Earth and a fierce commitment to protect and preserve her. She is a devoted mother, grandmother, seasoned plant woman, educator, and friend. Her history of impassioned plant work spans 40 years, including cultivating species collected while in Central & South America. In 1988 she co-founded one of the first ethnobotanical businesses and distributed thousands of medicinal plants nationwide as a conscious act of preservation. She sees plants from her gardens in many places, some have even graced the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. One of her final acts is to finish her much anticipated cultivation book.
