About this Event

Curious about watercolor paints but unsure where to begin? Or have you been working with watercolor and are looking to refresh your practice? Join us for a weekend watercolor intensive to experiment and experience joy in the process.



This watercolor workshop is intended for beginner and experienced watercolorists alike to expand their knowledge of watercolor techniques and get support for their own individual art practices. In this workshop we will take inspiration from the natural world, art materials, and reference photos to experiment with techniques and practice letting go of control to flow and be free on the page.

Participants will learn a variety of techniques including:

Salt application

Wet-on-wet

Dripping

Layering

Gouache and watercolor (optional)

Crayon relief

Variety of brushstrokes

Splattering

Oil pastel and watercolor

Pen/ink and watercolor

November 1 & 2



Where

This workshop will be taking place in the Dining Hall in the main building of Harwood Art Center, as well as outside if weather permits ; 1114 7th St. NW 87102.

Accessibility: Harwood is a 1925 registered historic building. The Dining Hall is fully ADA accessible, via a ramp to our main entrance. Access to the darkroom is limited. From our main entrance the darkroom is accessible via two sets of stairs; from a private entrance, available upon request, accessible via one set of stairs. General parking is available on the South side of the building in a lit lot; accessible parking is reserved in front of the main entrance. Armless chairs are available in the Dining Hall. Bathroom access is down the hall from the Dining Hall.



Who

YOU are welcome!

This class is open to adults ages 18 and up, teens under the age of 18 with parent permission (please email [email protected]). This workshop is appropriate for people of all experience levels.



What to Bring

Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials, works in progress, and/or reference photos for what they want to create in the workshop.


Required materials :

-Watercolor paper pack, 140lb hot press or cold press. Suggested watercolor papers include Arches, Strathmore, or Canson.

-watercolor paints. Tubed watercolor is highly recommended

-watercolor palette

-variety of watercolor brushes


Suggested additional materials :

-table salt

-white gouache. Zinc or titanium is okay!

-crayons (no water soluble)

-oil pastels

-micron pens

-liquid ink



Illness Policy

If you are feeling ill, please do not come to this class. This class is held in a large indoor space, participants are welcome to wear masks.

Refund Policy

Class Fee refunds will be issued on a case-by-case basis, Harwood will retain a 10% administrative fee. Requests must be emailed to Hallee ([email protected]) at least ten days prior to the start date of the class.


The Class Fees will not be refunded if students request to withdraw from the workshop less than ten days before the start date of the class or after the class has begun.


If the class is canceled by Harwood Art Center for any reason, Harwood will offer you two options: either refund the Class Fee in full OR issue a class credit in the full amount paid to be used within a year towards a Harwood Art School workshop.

About the Teaching Artist :

Jordan Merlino (they/them/theirs) is a Nonbinary watercolor artist living in Santa Fe, NM. Jordan has taught numerous classes, including Intro to Watercolor from 2021-2022 with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. They use watercolor in their daily art practice.
