Artist Statement: "My artistic practice represents the ways in which I observe, explore, and express who I am in this world. I have experimented with various crafts and mediums throughout my artistic career with a focus around my admiration for nature and longing for my native Korean heritage.
I am interested in nature-themed design, ecologically-driven materials and methods. After motherhood, I discovered traditional Korean needle crafts and natural dye methods, and I adopted natural dye and textiles as my main method and materials. For example, I collaborated with a colleague to create liturgical banners incorporating natural indigo dye, hand-stitching, and rich symbolism as a means of cross-religious dialogue."
Suki Kwon, born in Korea, studied psychology in her native Korea, but a yearlong stay in London, U.K. and a life-changing backpacking trip through Europe convinced her to change her path and pursue a career as an artist. She studied design both computer graphics and 3-dimensional design and earned M.A. and M.F.A. of Design from the University of Iowa where she established her design theory and experimented with various medium and methodologies. She is a designer who works with media and ideas that transcend limited definitions of design. She has been striving to bring together a sense of humanity and spirituality in her work and to give material form to concepts of beauty, simplicity, and harmony with nature.
Currently she is an associate professor of design at the University of Dayton, Ohio. Her works have been exhibited throughout the U.S. and in many parts of the world including China, Japan and Korea. She is a winner of NICHE awards and selected to a MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) Summer Artist in Residency and Norton Island Residency. Trilingual in Korean, English and Japanese, she performed an independent research in Tokyo, Japan with FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies) fellowship and Stanley scholarship. She’s a recipient of Hanley Sustainability Institute grant, Ohio Arts Council grant, Sustainability Energy Environment Seed Research Grant, two University of Dayton Seed Research Grants and Iowa Fine Arts Council grant. Her research interests include natural dye and textile installation art, comparative visual culture, and documentary film making.
The public is welcomed to an opening reception on January 15, 2026 from 6 - 8 p.m. with the exhibition on display through March 19, 2026.
