Exhibition Opening - Echoes of Presence

Two glass artists. Two enquiries. One shared material that reveals as much as it conceals.
Echoes of Presence brings together Lothar Böttcher and Caitlin Greenberg in a collaborative exhibition that is not a glass show — it is a conversation through the material about what we hold, what gets muffled, and what we make visible.
Greenberg gives presence to the phrases we bury — “sorry,” “it’s fine,” “never mind” — suspending text within glass where it blurs, surfaces, and retreats. Böttcher works from opposite ends of time — capturing the shadows of carved crystal beasts on photographic paper, placing sculptural TV screens within South African landscapes, and assembling anthropomorphic figures from studio offcuts that echo sculptures made 40,000 years ago.
One practice holds and mutes. The other reveals and animates. Both use light and glass to catch what would otherwise slip away.
The Artists:
- Lothar Böttcher is a South African glass sculptor whose work is held in the permanent collection of the Corning Museum of Glass and other museum collections across three continents. He is represented by the Homo Faber Guide as master artisan. He is a founding member of the Lathe Riders international cold working collective, an elected Board Member of the Glass Art Society, and founding member and director of the Moya African Glass Network.
- Caitlin Greenberg is a South African glass artist, educator, and researcher whose practice explores how objects and materials hold personal, social, and cultural narratives. She is head lecturer and subject coordinator of the glass studio at Tshwane University of Technology — the only university in South Africa offering glass as a creative medium — and has exhibited locally and internationally. Her work, Introspection, was selected for New Glass Review 46, published by the Corning Museum of Glass.
