We Believe in Love Not Luck

- Western Library, 254 Boulevard, HU3 3ED
For over a year from 2024, artist Kate Genever and photographer Tony Ward from Top Color print shop on Hessle Road, Hull, worked with customers and community members in a deep collaboration that produced 17 studio portraits, 17 collected histories and 17 large scale ceramic platters.
Everyone involved was deeply connected to Hessle Road. Their lives were shaped by being there… forged in the long but changing dockland history. Some come from families who, for generations, have lived and worked there. Others have arrived more recently.
The project began as an exploration into the maritime tattoos seen on many of the area's older men but developed a wider lens, and a process of collecting the visible and invisible marks people carry. Marks that represent identity, struggle, love and history.
