About this Event
"Broken Mother Tongue" showcases a series of new handwoven rugs by the British Afghan artist, Ghafar Tajmohammad. The exhibition explores the fragmented and fractured nature of the Afghan Diaspora in the UK through the visual language of Islamic Geometric Patterns. These patterns are individualised and personified as separate shapes departing from their typical unity in tessellating patterns. Distinguished by their various Moquette designs taken from public transport seats in London. Each shape is set against a backdrop of a camouflage pattern, symbolizing the themes of conflict, resettlement, and integration within this migrant community.
As part of the exhibition, Ghafar will host a handweaving workshop and conduct live demonstrations of weaving at ISHKAR's Columbia Road Store. Visit us to discover Ghafar’s rugs up-close and to meet the artist.

Ghafar Tajmohammad is as a contemporary artist based in London. His work reflects upon home, belonging and relocation across the Afghan diaspora community in the UK, drawing upon his owned lived experience as a British Afghan whose family was displaced during the 1997 civil war in Afghanistan. Working primarily in the field of painting and more recently as a rug weaver. He holds a Bachelor degree in Painting from Camberwell College of Arts and has been funded by Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grant in 2023 for his solo exhibition, Afghan War Rugs Reimagined, 2023. Ghafar has exhibited with Hypha Studios, New Art Exchange and Counterpoints Arts and works as Curatorial Assistant at the Migration Museum.
