About this Event
While the sounds of 20th century jazz standards can be brought up in seconds on your favorite music streaming platform, nothing compares to hearing them played from their original records. Fortunately, one local jazz archivist has amassed a trove of thousands of records from the biggest names in jazz, and is ready to show off his private collection to the public for the very first time. It's time to step inside a private residence (turned bona fide jazz den) to listen to some of history's most groundbreaking jazz records like never before.
Join New York Adventure Club for an exclusive listening session through the deep and comprehensive jazz 78rpm record collection of The Hot Club of New York, a jazz listening organization in New York City that explores the many eras of jazz.
Led by jazz archivist Matthew "Fat Cat" Rivera, who spins records each week for The Hot Club of New York and on WKCR-FM, this exclusive experience surrounding his one-of-a-kind studio and collection in Brooklyn will include:
- A behind-the-scenes tour of Fat Cat's home with its priceless record collection and music archiving studio
- A discussion of the history of 78rpm records, from the earliest Jazz recordings, to its evolution through Ragtime, Swing, BeBop, and beyond
- A close look at the special equipment Rivera uses to preserve and play historic recordings
- An intimate listening session featuring a curated selection of rare 78rpm records, all played on a vintage high-fidelity sound system
- Complimentary wine to indulge in
No experience at The Hot Club of New York headquarters is ever the same.
See you there!

About Matthew "Fat Cat" Rivera
The sounds of Jazz first captivated archivist Matthew "Fat Cat" Rivera at a young age, compelling him to seek out the music and dig deeper into its history. It was Sidney Bechet's "Blue Horizon," Louis Armstrong's "Potato Head Blues," and Billie Holiday's "Did I Remember?" among others, that ignited Rivera's fervent passion for collecting and sharing the music, a passion that has since led him to assemble an archive of thousands of records that he presents each week with a listening group called The Hot Club of New York and on WKCR-FM. Now, for the first time, Rivera is offering a behind-the-scenes tour of his deep and comprehensive Jazz collection and the opportunity to hear the music on a world class sound system.
