About this Event
Egypt — the land of glistening golden treasures; legendary Pharaohs, breathtaking Pyramids; magnificent temples; and mysterious deep tombs covered in hieroglyphic text. While you've probably read or watched a documentary or two about some of the most spectacular treasured finds from this eternal ancient civilization, have you ever wondered how the discovery of archaeological sites and artifacts started in Egypt? It's time to trace the origins of the hunt for Egyptian treasures like never before.
Join New York Adventure Club as take a deep dive into the rarely known history of the discovery of Egypt’s once lost treasures and timeless sites, ranging from the beginnings of archaeological treasured finds in Egypt (from the Ancient Egyptians themselves) to early travelers in the 16th century who laid the foundations of the study of Egyptology as we know it today.
Led by Archaeologist and Egyptologist, Stacey Anne Bagdi, our virtual journey through Egypt will include:
- An introduction of Egyptology — we’ll follow the evolution of the study and exploration of Egypt’s ancient past from the early beginnings in antiquity to the notorious Greeks, as well as the 16th century explorers
- Illuminating insight into Napoleon’s Expedition — we’ll uncover the foundations of Egyptology through his “savants” and the infamous 'Description de L'Égypte', as well as the iconic Rosetta Stone breakthrough
- A deep dive into Egypt’s Victorian exploration past — we’ll follow in the footsteps of early travelers and explorers during the revolutionary 18th and 19th centuries, with a focus on key figures in Egypt including Champollion, Sir John Gardner Wilkinson, and Auguste Mariette
- A look at the famous Victorian travel group known as Thomas Cook & Son, which took the earliest “tourists” to Egypt including Amelia Edwards, who wrote ‘Thousand Miles Up the Nile’ in 1877
- A review of some of the most famous Egyptologists including Howard Carter, Flinders Petrie, and the legendary Zahi Hawass — from the 19th century to the present day, we’ll dig up some of their most famous discoveries and their extraordinary artifacts, along with a look at some of the female Egyptologist trailblazers
- Insight into present day exploration — we’ll look at some of the Egyptians paving the way for Egyptology, and gain an inclusive insight into what it is like to excavate today in Egypt through Stacey’s own experiences!
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Stacey — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
