Written and directed by Alex Garland (Civil War, Men), the film stars Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb, a programmer an a major tech company who wins a competition to spend a week at the mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac, absolutely relishing his chance to play a villain), only to find there are ulterior motives. Namely, Caleb must administer a Turing Test to Nathan’s female humanoid robot (played with uncanny iciness by Alicia Vikander). Tense, claustrophobic, and full of shocking twists, EX MACHINA taps into our collective fears around AI, while also exploring themes of gender, class, and power—all while remaining darkly funny, visually stunning (the film won a well-deserved Oscar for Best Visual Effects) and absolutely gripping. EX MACHINA updates the Frankenstein mythos for the near future, in the process revealing how timely Mary Shelley’s novel remains.
