Chopin at his most mercurial, and Shostakovich’s response to Bach as well as his piano sonata swansong all come under the spotlight as the great pianist attends to unfinished business.Back in February Evgeny Kissin anchored performances of Shostakovich’s sonatas for violin, viola, and cello. Now he returns to play the lean, sometimes wistful Second Piano Sonata as well as excerpts from Shostakovich’s extended tribute to Bach. Chopin, a Kissin favourite, is not forgotten, and a spot of nocturnal reverie is capped by the E major Scherzo, a work in which incandescent passion and caprice meet.
Technically unassailable, interpretatively distinctive, Evgeny Kissin is one of the world’s most sought-after pianists – among his many awards, Echo Klassik’s Soloist of the Year. The Washington Post wonders if ‘anyone else has the virtuosity to step this far outside the box with such honesty, and dignity, and power’. ‘Kissin’ has a phenomenal technique’, argues BBC Music Magazine, ‘and no inhibitions about displaying it’.
