Your Topic:

Everything you wanted to know about the vagus nerve, but were afraid to ask
The vagus nerve is having a cultural moment, from bookshops to wellness blogs, everyone seems to be talking about how to “reset” or “train” it. Well, what do we really know, and what is just hype? In this talk Prof Vaughan Macefield will talk about how he developed the approach of performing direct microelectrode recordings from the human vagus nerve.

Delving into what has been learned so far and what more there is to uncover. Yoga mats will not be required.

Your Speaker:

Vaughan is a leading human neurophysiologist who has spent his career uncovering how our nerves keep the body running. After completing his PhD in respiratory neurophysiology, he trained in labs across Australia, Sweden and the US before holding senior research and teaching roles in Sydney, Western Sydney University and Dubai.

Vaughan is internationally recognised for his pioneering work using tiny microelectrodes to record signals from single nerve fibres in awake people, a technique that has revealed how our nerves control functions like blood pressure, touch and pain. Most recently, he achieved the first-ever recordings from the human vagus nerve using ultrasound-guided microneurography.
