About this Event
---------------------------------------------
International education is an important export sector for New Zealand, and an opportunity for our own students to expand their horizons. But it is so much more. Global education connections create a strategic bridge between economic opportunities and international engagement, generating value that extends well beyond export revenue and student spending.
Within this context, the New Zealand–China education relationship is particularly significant. China remains New Zealand’s largest source of international students, while New Zealanders studying in China contribute to deeper language capability and cultural understanding between the two countries.
As we enter 2026, what is the current state of the New Zealand–China education relationship, and where is it heading?
- How many Chinese students are currently in New Zealand, and which sub-sectors are they studying in?
- What new trends are emerging in institutional and research partnerships?
- How about Chinese language and outbound study trends for NZ students?
- What is the current state of New Zealand-China academic and research collaboration?
- How is education exchange strengthening the bilateral relationship in other ways?
- What risks and challenges does the sector face?
These questions are explored in our latest research report, Learning to make a difference: The New Zealand-China education relationship and its impacts.
On 19 March, the New Zealand China Council | Te Kaunihera o Aotearoa me Haina will host an in-person event at the University of Canterbury to present the report.
Report author Rebecca Needham will present the key findings, followed by a panel discussion featuring education sector leaders and alumni to examine the multiple dimensions, impacts and challenges of the New Zealand–China education relationship.
