Join Riverside Iowa Paranormal at our event at MISSOURI STATE PENITENTIARY!🗓️March 28, 2026
📍Jefferson City
Opened in 1836 in Jefferson City, the Missouri State Penitentiary operated for 168 years as the oldest functioning prison west of the Mississippi and housed notorious inmates such as James Earl Ray, “Pretty Boy” Floyd, and Sonny Liston. Known as “the bloodiest 47 acres in America,” the prison introduced execution by lethal gas in 1937, ultimately putting 40 inmates to death before death row moved to Potosi in 1989. Throughout its history, MSP saw riots, escapes, and in the 1980s uncovered a buried Civil War-era cell block believed to be the oldest structure on the property. Decommissioned in 2004, the site now operates as a major historical and tour destination due to its violent and compelling past.
