Shetland Hand Knitters’ Association was the brainchild of Prophet Smith, secretary of Shetland’s branch of the seamen’s union. Designed to combat the control of the industry in Shetland by knitwear merchants, the first meeting in 1943 was attended by 34 women delegates from across Shetland.
