Ok, after a 5 year hiatus, let's get out shooting do Family Photography Classes! I love shooting at Rainbow Haven as there are so many different areas to shoot with so many different looks without going too far at all from the parking lot. I always get great images there so….well, let me show you how I do it. :)This is the same sold out class I'd do several times each summer before the pandemic and we always had a great time! Over the last few weeks, I've received e-mails and messages asking if I was going to do more this year...so here it is!! Let's do an evening shooting class at Rainbow Haven. (I'm also launching another class, the morning class I love teaching, at Crystal Crescent Beach. It will be Saturday, July 6th)
I have Deandra, Devon and their beautiful young family (three kids) lined up to be our models and we’ll together do a family photo shoot, from start to finish. I’ll show you the things I do to get the kids comfy before the shoot right to the little tricks I do during the shoot to keep them engaged (and happy). We'll talk, posing, the weather, shots that work great, and shots that don't, etc
WE'LL LEARN:
- My gear selection and camera/flash settings. It took me a while to really figure out on-camera flash…I’ll make it easy for you! Let me know if you don't have a flash and I'll let you know the best and most affordable one to pick up so you can get some practice in before the class.
- Great locations and how to spot them
- How to shoot for the weather (sun, wind, fog, etc)
- When not to shoot here.
- Blocking out other people in public places
- Getting the most out of the kids
- Pick my brain on my business and/or chat about yours
We’ll do it Sunday, June 30th at 5:30 (the family arrives at 6:00) and shoot for an hour and a half or so. Afterward, for any of you who would like to keep the evening going, we'll head to Big Leagues Pub for a chit chat and some food (on me). If it’s raining, we’ll bump the class to a rain date (Saturday, July 6th).
THE FEE will be same as when I did them pre-pandemic, $250.00 plus tax per person (I’ll see to it that you make that back in one or two shoots) and because of the nature of this session, I will NOT be accepting more than 9 people. Once you e-mail me and let me know you'd like to participate, I'll send you payment info and I'll prepare a receipt for your business writeoff.
IN ADDITION to the class fee, you’ll be expected to send me 10 or more images from the shoot the following week as I’ll be forwarding them to the family. They are excited to receive so many photos from a vast array of local photographers. They will also receive a shoots' worth from me plus each of the kids will get their own reward!
GIVEAWAY! AS AN ADDED INCENTIVE, from the nine of you, I’ll draw one name during the class to WIN a family shoot! This winner can do the session whenever and wherever they like, including their favourite spot, and see how I would shoot it. Remember, not only would you get images of you and your family….but the shoot would be nearly an hour of additional instructional time as I would 'talk it out'.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU NEED: Of course, you'll bring your camera, a few lenses and your flash as we’ll spend the evening shooting. The only thing I ask is that you know a few basic things about your camera, such as what a focal length is, how to change your aperture, exposure and other key settings on your camera as well as some general knowledge of your flash as we'll be using high speed sync as well as flash exposure compensation. Both of these are easy to change and can readily be found in your manual or on YouTube.
Like years' past, I will make myself available an hour before (4:30) for anyone would like to go over a bit of flash work if you have any questions about it. Just let me know you'd like to attend early and I'll be there.
But yes, I don't want to take too much time from what I’m doing to show each of you how to change your white balance or exposure compensation, etc….so please have a relatively good knowledge of your camera before the class. And any principles we learn here can be applied anywhere you shoot - but I'll make sure you feel completely comfortable shooting any group at this location, and it's such a great location in the morning.
And as anyone from any of my classes has already found, the learning/teaching doesn't end at the pub. If you have any questions, I'll always be available to answer any questions you may have.
We’ll have a lot of fun. I really do enjoy sharing what I’ve learned over my 17 years in this profession and I’m looking forward to passing these skills to anyone who wants to learn! And let's make this location one you can be totally comfy shooting!
