About this Event

A Lecture on His Life, Scottish Values and Ongoing Legacy

Andrew Carnegie was born in a humble cottage in Dunfermline during the winter storms of 1935. His family left Scotland for a better life in the United States of America when young Andrew was just 12 years old.

Join Carnegie Dunfermline Trust CEO, Gillian Taylor for an evening lecture on how his early years in Scotland shaped young Andrew Carnegie. His story is an inspiring one, rising out of poverty to build a huge steel empire that made him the richest man in the World.

However, the most remarkable part of the story is the fact that he gave his wealth away, following his own motto of ‘a man who dies rich, dies disgraced’.

About the Speaker

Gillian Taylor is the CEO of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trust. She joined the Trust in June 2020 following a varied career in local government and running her own business ventures.

Gillian originally trained as an accountant before deciding that she preferred people to budgets! She previously worked for Fife Council as the Community Manager for Dunfermline and, while working in this role, she became inspired by the story of Andrew Carnegie and his ongoing legacy through the work of the global Carnegie family of foundations.

The purpose of her organisation is to bring ‘sweetness and light’ to the people of Dunfermline through a programme of grant giving and partnership working. The Trust also operates the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum which tells the rags to riches story of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and how from humble Scottish beginnings he became the richest man in the World.

In addition to her work in Dunfermline, Gillian’s role covers the Carnegie Hero Fund which regonises civilian heroism throughout Great Britain and Ireland.
