Let's sketch in the National Gallery of Canada -- during the weekly Thursday evening hours when admission is free!INFO:
MEET-UP:
At the beginning -- 5 to 5:15 pm: the Foyer
At the end -- 7:45 to 8pm: Sketches
(see post in Discussion thread with map & more details)
The NGC is rather specific about what we can bring into the gallery and what we can sketch with.
Here is the information I have from them:
Here are the following rules we ask visitors to follow when sketching at the Gallery:
- Paper/sketchbook does not exceed 45 cm x 60 cm (18"x24")
- Only lead (graphite) pencil can be used. No wet mediums allowed (unfortunately you may not use your water brushes)
- Do not use an eraser (kneaded erasers are allowed)
- Please be considerate of other visitors and do not impede their flow or block their view of an artwork.
- Do not use walls, podiums, paintings or any artwork to draw against
- Do not block an emergency exit
The Gallery has plenty of fold-up stools for visitors to use. You may pick them up upon your arrival and the box office staff can show you where we keep them throughout the Gallery.
Also, I asked about using coloured pencils, and here is what I was told:
Unfortunately, despite being a dry medium, color pencil should still not be used in the galleries. The waxes contained in the color pencil makes it difficult to remove from porous surfaces without permanently damaging the artwork. Graphite pencil damage, on the other hand, is easier to treat. Of course, any pencil or pointy object should be used carefully to avoid accidents with the works. Thank you for your interest for the National Gallery of Canada's collection and for your help in preserving it for years to come.
