About this Event
Step into the sun-drenched hills of Laurel Canyon, September 1973, where music, fame, and scandal collide in Edinburgh University Shakespeare Company’s electrifying adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Set against the backdrop of Watergate-era America, this bold retelling captures the highs and lows of fame and reputation, exploring themes of misogyny, independence, and the trappings of public personas in the uninhibited hedonism
of the 1970s.
At the heart of the story is music producer Leonato, desperate to maintain relevance in an ever-changing industry, hosting a star-studded celebration for his label. Amidst the chaos, love blooms between rising rock star Claudio and Leonato’s sheltered daughter Hero, while the fiery, independent photographer Beatrice spars with Benedick, a flamboyant frontman. In this new adaptation, music plays a central role, with a live band embedded onto the stage and each character embodying a defining musical movement of the time. Performing for four nights at the Pleasance Theatre, this is a Shakespeare extravaganza not to miss!
