From Håkonshallen to Litteraturhuset: a guided walk through medieval Bergen with Professor Alf Tore Hommedal.Welcome to the second day of CANTA’s Europa 1300, which begins at 13:00 with a medieval walk leading into the afternoon programme at Litteraturhuset, starting at 14:00.
The walk begins at Bergenhus, the medieval Holmen, once the royal and ecclesiastical international centre of Norway. We start at Håkonshallen, the greatest of the thirteenth-century royal halls still standing, notable for its British and broader European architectural influences.
From there we walk to Bryggen, stopping at the ruins of St Catherine’s Hospital, before continuing to St Mary’s Church to examine its oldest Lombard-inspired architecture. At Bryggen, archaeological finds reflecting contact with Italy will be explored, including pottery, runic inscriptions, and pilgrim badges from Bari, Rome, and Lucca, pointing to pilgrimage routes between Norway and Italy.
The walk continues toward Vågsbunnen and Litteraturhuset, with stops including the former Franciscan friary, today Bergen Cathedral. This year marks 800 years since the death of Francis of Assisi in 1226; his order established itself in Bergen only one or two decades later.
