“Random thoughts for Valentine’s Day, 2004…. Today is a holiday invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap.”Featuring the uniquely imaginative and whimsical visual aesthetic of director Michel Gondry, a story from the genius mind of Charlie Kaufman (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH), and career-high performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as a couple whose relationship is disappearing before them, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND holds a special place as one of cinema’s most unusual romance (or anti-romance?) films ever made. This film is a singular work of non-linear cinematic poetry that walks a magical and heartfelt line between hilarity and heartbreak – in a dimension all its own. Also starring Tom Wilkinson, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood and David Cross.
“It’s a very Kaufmanesque narrative experiment, technically ingenious and sophisticated. It also looks like some lost comedy idea by Philip K Dick; you could call this film We Can Forget It for You Retail.” (Guardian)
“A surprisingly bittersweet love story at heart, Eternal Sunshine values the sum of experience, which in this case means a thorns-and-all openness to romantic possibilities.” (AV Club)
“The result is a cinematic vagueness that makes the film less aesthetic yet more persuasive. This is how dreams really look: like reality, only less so.” (The Atlantic)
