In a time where the borders of society grow increasingly blurred, Nick (they/them) poses the questions; “What is trans enough?” or “What is Asian enough?”. The work pulls apart these agitations as a young adult in so-called “Australia”. ‘Estranged From the Form’ serves as a pertinent interrogation of the loss of self through the themes of generational trauma, gender dysphoria and queer identity.
Combining elements of dance, theatre, visual art, poetry and live improvisational music, the work functions as a 3-piece band and a dancer all engaged in guided free improvisation. The performance balances each artist’s innate creativity with precise compositions. Interaction, impulse and spontaneity drive the energy of the piece, with a distinct narrative through-line tying it together. Consisting of delicate relationships, “Estranged From The Form” interweaves a variety of sonic textures and physical gestures serving as means of communication - each performer has something strikingly unique to their role.
