100Km cycling event starting from The Battesford Court, Witham. Controls at Witham, Little Easton Manor, Saffron Walden, Stanstead Abbotts, and Enfield IslandStage one of the Essex Tourdax. A loop into North-West Essex then down to the River Lea towpath at Stansted Abbotts. Camping and budget hotels near the finish.
Starting from the Battesford Court, 100 Newland Street, Witham CM8 1AH. Car parking at Witham Labour Club (The Labour Hall, Collingwood Rd, Witham CM8 2EE – use the white spaces NOT the yellow NCP ones) for a £5 donation (cash only please, at the start). Directions to the start: right from the car park, follow to main traffic lights where right & straight on at the lights immediately afterwards. The Battesford Court is on the right in Newland Street just before the zebra crossing. Park in the beer garden, accessed up the alley to the right.
The Tourdax 1 route goes to Little Easton Manor café for elevenses, up to Saffron Walden for lunch (several pubs and cafés – the Temeraire, Wetherspoons is bike friendly and on the route). After lunch there’s the option of a cheeky pub stop in Stansted Abbotts before a short-ish section of the River Lea Navigation towpath (all well surfaced).
The arrivée at Enfield Island is near to the Enfield Premier Inn and the campsite at Lea Valley Leisure Complex, Meridian Way, Edmonton, London N9 0AR. Evening pub meal at the Greyhound pub, Edmonton Lock or a harvester pub, the Navigation at Ponders End Lock, tbc … there’s also a Tesco Express, a convenience store and various fast-food outlets nearby, on Enfield Island and in Ordnance Road.
