About this Event
After a long COVID hiatus, the Essex Chamber Music Players will return to the stage on Sunday, May 1, at 3 p.m. with a first-time concert at Christ Church, 23 Central St. in Andover, MA.
“We are excited to be coming back and providing our audience with some thought-provoking music during these difficult times,” ECMP Artistic Director and flutist Michael Finegold said. The concert, titled Premiers and a Historical Reflection, features two world premiers: "Smile of the Great Spirit" for flute, violin, cello and piano by Andover composer Demetrius Spaneas, and Memory Garden for flute, cello and piano by Elliott Miles McKinley.
A third work on the program, “Reflection,” is the great historical work Piano Trio No. 2, in E minor, Op.67 for violin, cello and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich. The performance of this piece is a pointed rebuke for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Shostakovich endured a similarly brutal regime and opposed its excesses through “hidden” themes in his music. The Second Piano Trio is a condemnation of war's brutality.
The works will be introduced by their composers, Spaneas, a noted composer and performer, and McKinley, the ECMP composer-in-residence and the son of the late well-known American composer and jazz pianist William Thomas McKinley. David Derow, a music aficionado, will introduce the Shostakovich. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions before and after each musical work.
The Essex Chamber Music Players, all of them talented musicians, are Jean Huang, violin; Michael Finegold, flute; Sebastian Bäverstam, cello, and Constantine Finehouse, piano.
