John Kavanaugh, owner of the 77-year-old Esquire Club, is passing the baton to a new generation/owner, but a familiar face on the Madison food scene.
New owner Craig Spaulding was a pioneering downtown Madison restaurateur, owning Cafe Montmartre, the restaurant, bar and music space, a downtown fixture for almost 17 years, an oasis of chic even before the downtown's revival, Shirley Manson and the Garbage gang were often seen there.
John (Jack) Kavanaugh, Jr. and his wife, Jane, purchased and reinvented the Esquire Club in 1947, not only Madison’s longest running supper club, but one of its oldest still in existence.
Also located on Madison’s Northside, The River is the busiest food pantry in South Central Wisconsin. Services include free groceries and freshly prepared meals for pickup or delivery, online grocery orders, mobile meals, and emergency food lockers. The River also redistributes rescued food and resources to local partners to increase access while minimizing waste. Since 2006, The River has grown to serve over 2,500 people every week in pursuit of its vision: a fully nourished community.
