EROTEME’S AUTUMN SEASON CONCLUDES WITH ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH, RETURNING TO ASCENSION CHURCH, MANCHESTER.
Following their 2022 appearance at Ascension, Ensemble Nist-Nah return with a refreshed line-up and new material. Formed in 2019, the ensemble is a hybrid gamelan/percussion group led by Nantes-based Australian drummer Will Guthrie. Using gongs, singing bowls, bells, and drums, the eight-piece creates music that is intricate, physical, and continually evolving.
Rather than reconstructing tradition, Nist-Nah explores resonant metals and layered rhythms as material for experimentation. Their music is informed by Guthrie’s travels and studies in Indonesia, but also draws on contemporary experimental and improvisatory practices.

Bio
Ensemble Nist-Nah was formed in 2019 as a hybrid gamelan/percussion ensemble, led by Will Guthrie. The group’s music is informed and inspired by traditional gamelan and gong-based musics from Southeast Asia, yet avoids reconstruction or exoticism. Instead, their focus is on sonic interaction, collective invention, and continual evolution.
Drawing on Guthrie’s long engagement with resonant metals, the ensemble uses gongs, singing bowls, bells and drums as both melodic and rhythmic material, developing polyrhythmic and polymetric fields of sound. Their influences range from Javanese gamelan and Balinese composer Dewa Alit to experimental percussion pioneers such as Roscoe Mitchell and Henry Threadgill.
Since its formation, Nist-Nah has brought together musicians from diverse backgrounds and regularly collaborates with guests such as Jennifer Torrence, Sarah Hennies, and Jessika Kenney. Alongside performances, members run workshops in schools, prisons, and community centres, introducing gamelan instruments as tools for shared music-making.
